When I used crutches after foot surgery I found that canvas tote bags were the best way to carry things around. I could even carry my own coffee if I put it in a travel mug in the bag.

Have you seen the newer walkers on wheels that are really like all terrain vehicles? A couple of men at my mom's assisted living home had them and took long walks outside with them. I think one with decent sized wheels might give you even better stability in the yard and it's lots easier to attach carry baskets to one than to struggle with carrying things with the canes. I think some have built-in seats, too. I'll look around the web and see if I can see the kind I'm remembering.

These are the sort I'm thinking of. The ones with 8" wheels should be able to go across fairly rough ground.

I do use a wheeled walker for shopping, as I need to sit down frequently. I have a 4-wheeled one, but I noticed the 3-wheeled one, which would probably be easier to steer.

For short trips, I have found that just using my two canes and a lightweight backpack is fairly workable, but I still need a way to pull a cart behind me.

Yes, I think that would work. My sister and her husband windsurf. They use a harness and line to hitch themselves to the boom once they are underway. It takes the strain off their hands and arms. The harnesses are made like either a belt or vest with a kind of clip or shackle to hook onto a line attached to the horizontal boom. You should be able to rig something like that to a garden cart. Look up "windsurfer harness" to see some examples.

I finally found two even better canes, at a medical supply store. They are adjustable and the handles are over an inch wide, in a soft but washable plastic. Someone told me they had found the same one at Wal Mart for even less!
