Can ants hurt my flower garden ?

Does anyone know if ants can hurt my perennial garden , I live near a creek and get lots of ants, any suggestions. Thanks

The only thing I've heard about is that ants will nurture aphids so they can eat their honeydew secretions. It's the aphids that do the damage to the plants.
