Freezer Planters

When we replaced out big old chest type freezer with an upright, we made a planter out of it. We filled the bottom with old bricks, about a third of the way, then a thick layer of really old straw, and the rest with good soil/compost mix. I do have to add some soil each year as the straw breaks down. It is great for lettuce and salad greens, and easy to cover in cold -ot hot-weather.

This has worked so well that I am going to try to find some more discarded freezers, and make some more planters. And it is always fun to tell people that I am going to get some lettuce out of the freezer!!!!
