Aker, what a great idea. I wish you had posted about two weeks ago, I would have done the same. It was very difficult getting all the bulbs planted (around 300)into the ground this year. First, your idea would have allowed me the opportunity to plant in pots while I was seated and second, helped to indicated exactly where the bulbs are. They are marked, of coarse, however, there is just one marker for 10 bulbs and the exact spot is approximated. I noticed that you said you put them into larger containers. How do you think that would work if I set the 5" pots directly into the ground? This time I planted them under the foliage of my perennials with the hope that when the spring flowers are spent the foliage of the perennials would cover the unsightly leave until they turn yellow. I will try to cover those that are out in the open with some annuals (like clematis).
I think I like your idea better. It is not quite 2 years since I started my small garden, and already I have removed a few that just didn't look like the picture and made a little more room by removing some that grew a little larger than the books said they would. Perhaps, my soil is better than I thought. If I had planted my bulbs in pots then I could had moved them around at will. What a great idea for others to follow.
By the way, are the large pots made of clay? If they are? where do you keep them durig the winter. I was told if I leave the containers that now hold annuals (to be removed this week) outdoors that they will crack. If you can give me an idea where to keep these large pots over the winter, I just might buy a few more bulbs and try it your way. punky
