Repotting advice needed

I recently purchased my first Desert Rose (obesum) from Home Depot. I was in the middle of a roadtrip, but the plant survived the trip fairly well other than losing its flowers and a few leaves.

It seems really happy in the east facing window I have it placed, with several new leaves shooting out. I think I may need to repot it though. While the soil seems well draining (water comes right out the bottom when I water it), the roots are growing out of the bottom of the plastic pot.

I was planning on repotting it in a clay pot, but I'm not sure what to do with the gnarly roots once I remove the soil. I'l try to attach pictures of how it currently looks.

I only recently learned how important it is for plants to be repotted, so I'm not completely confident in what I'm doing. Any advice would be much appreciated!
