Both very nice, Kirk. Hard to now what to do, but atleast if you keep it grafting stock you can always let it grow on if you prefer later on. Atleast the pruning will keep it compact and at the same time give you lots of scion stock.
Maybe even turn it into a multi color grafted specimen as Mary has shown us.

I agree, the first is an award winner in my opinion. I am thinking since it's in the near color range of my Rik Ni Ran it'd be a great candidate for a multi graft plant of reds. I now wish I had a double layer red so the graft would be single, double and triple.
