It is not unusual for leaves to turn yellow and fall off when the plants are taken out of direct sunlight and placed inside. Often the same thing happens to plants that are outside and then placed in a greenhouse. I placed a number of my plants in the greenhouse about two weeks ago and most have already dropped some leaves. However, some of the same plants are putting out new buds and leaves and a couple have already bloomed. (I'll post some pictures in the immediate future of the flowers).

Regarding the caudexes shrinking, that could be a sign of drought (hopefully) or they might have developed root rot or a fungus and you may loose the plants (hopefully not). I had some seedlings a couple of years ago that did the same thing that you describe and unfortunately, they all passed on, but others survived. At that time, my guess was that the seedlings that died contracted a fungus. Since then, before I move any plants or seedlings from outside to inside, I always let them dry out somewhat (soil just damp) and spray them with a fungicide and Neem Oil to kill any pests. So far, this has worked for me.

well their soil was completely dry so i gave them all a good soaking and am hoping it will perk them up
