They will recover. I'd bring them into the house to keep the critters away from them.

I would also repot them if they are exposed from the old soil.. You said mud?

Does the soil turn to mud when watered? Just a few questions so we can help you...

Can you find perlite?

I would also seal these cuts to prevent rot. I use a waterproof wood glue over the new cuts to keep water and or insects from getting into the new stem cut.

As far as those monkeys.. I like the idea of keeping the trees outside, but if they are a target, then bring them inside to protect from those guys. My first thought was to tell you to use a barrier like a cage made from wire fencing or use tomato cages and try and make something to cover the open end, but those monkeys like a challenge... They might like to try and get to them again.

You might have to bring them in like Kay mentioned if the monkeys continue to mess with them.

I think they will survive..
