wanted: fall round robin..

It would be neat if we could do a few Fall round robin's...
I'll start a box, if anyone else wants to, feel free to post a new thread. It's much easier to keep track of each box with a NEW thread.

So, for FALL 2014 box 1...

25 varieties, priority mail with delivery confirmation number posted- to track box at all times. Post when box arrives, and goes back out with confirmation number.

25 varieties MUST be named, labeled clearly. AND the box must have 25 varieties at all times! So, you MUST be willing to take/replace- and be fair to other traders, don't sent anything less than 25! If a few die, you must be able to replace them!

I would love to send this out at the end of AUGUST! So, it travels through Sept. And another box can be started to go through October. Or as many boxes as possible if we can find other hosts to participate, and start a box.

It's going to be a mixed box- mini's, semi's, standards. And a few 'other' gessie surprises, primulina leaves, etc. Cuttings from 'other' gessies. I would go into great detail, I want it to be a surprise as usual! :) Everything will be named.

Who's in... POST here for box #1!
And feel free to start any other boxes- post a new thread. The more the better. I want to build up my stock too- it's going to be a long winter, and I want to have some new varieties to play with! Remember, your only COST is postage. Priority postage- this is the best way to trade. And find some new things to grow.

MIXED box.... 25 items....
Let's get this going... I might even put my name in the middle- so I can refresh the box, and get more varieties. I'm really board with my collection! LOL! ;)

Send your info to- Debandruska@gmail.com

I'm using this address to keep track of all our RR's. Otherwise, it's too confusing to search through more than one email. Which I have.. LOL!

And please feel free to start a new post/new box swap if you want to start one! Do plantlets- semi's/mini's, or whatever- mixed boxes are fine too! Include me! :)

I need addresses- sorry.. I only have Eileen's. She sent it to the Debandruska@gmail.com

I purchased a new HP chromebook, and am using this from now on for our swaps. It's easier for all info to be in one place. So, could everyone except Eileen send me your address. Thanks! :)
Label it as "Fall Swap 2014"

I'm really looking forward to swapping!

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Anyone interested in starting a box #2? For fall? If so- start to post the thread with any 'possible' date to start. It would be so much fun to do a plantlet box! Anyone have enough to share? If so, please include me! ;) It doesn't have to be a total plantlet box, leaves can be mixed in!

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Both sound good to me, but I don't know if I would have enough to actually start the round. The first RR last spring had a mix of plantlets and leaves when I got it and I sent it back out the same way.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Vikki,
Just trying to get some interest going in trading violets! ;) A while back- we always had so much interest, now it seems as though it's just our little group of friends (violet diehards LOL!) doing all the trading. I wish we could get more new people to join.

I'll do the best mix up possible with the swap box! I'll try to rearrange the lineup the best that I can so we don't receive the same stuff/selection as the last two times! I wanted to start this soon. Other Fall swaps are starting around the 25th/August. That would of been perfect for me too- but it depends on weather, and if Everyone is comfortable with taking a risk on shipping. I'll line a big priority box with the 'foil' insulation again like I did previously, everything should be fine. We do have a limited amount of time before it turns chilly! Chicago previously used to get frost all the time in September! Not any more- so that's good on my end! I can usually trade until late October. After that- it's risky! Snow in November usually!

Any more interest?

So far we have- (if you have stars after your name I have your address)

I do know of two people who are interested in the rr but they aren't currently part of gw. I did give them the link and told them to sign up. We'll see if they do. Susan McClure said she'll pass on round one but will probably be interested in round two.

I would love to participate but all i have is a TON of plant lets, all miniatures. I'm just starting out so everything is small. No full grown leaves yet. If that is okay to put in the box count me in! Also, i'm traveling for work from 9/10-9/22 so don't know if it is possible to ensure i get the box at a time other than that. Sorry i have so many exceptions…. that is why i held back.

Pat dropped out, She was interested in a Standards only box. Hopefully, we can do one of those next.

Minal, so far we only have one box going. Stop starting rumors, LOL!!!!!
Kaity was going add plantlets- to the box. I wish we had more people to join so we could do 2 boxes. I thought for sure this morning that I would of seen posts that Everyone wanted to do the two boxes! ;)

I want to do a few swaps this Fall. I really hope this works out- boxes travel quickly! Keep checking the forum for more info! It's in the 90's this week. We had such a mild summer- I could of probably traded all summer. We only hit the low 80's most of the time, and sometimes low 70's! I regret not trading- I would hesitate when it turned 80 only because I know how hot we usually get! It just didn't happen until now!

Maybe next week- for the next 5 days, heat and storms.. let's see if it get's better in 5 days.

Welcome to the swap Sue! If a few more join in, yes we will do 2 boxes. I'll start them. But, just letting you know they will both be boxes filled with NAMED MIXED gessies. What I mean by that- is 25 different hybrids (named) of Mini's, semi's, standards, Kohleria cuttings, streptocarpella cuttings, Primulina leaves- episcia cuttings, whatever really fits in the box. So be prepared to try some new things! I'm going to mix up the names as best as possible, and might even throw my name in the middle, so I get the box back twice. I really am so tired of my collection. I'm trying to get some new stuff before winter. I wanted to place a few orders (from Rob's, Travis) but will wait until I see what's in the box! I want more variety! More variegated ones too!

So, anyone else interested? The more- the better! :)
NAMED only---

Hi Deb,

I hope this works this time.

I am retired and grow AV's for a hobby, which is taking over my basement.
I have been able to over 100 using facebook. Check it out.

I think a good estimate would be about 500 plants of 100 different.

I don't know Vickie??

My facebook name is:

George Maksim

I use Cork my nick name forever.

I am a member of AVSA.

What else??

I never did a round robin but would like to try.

It looks like a lot of perple want to join. May I suggest
you group members by states which are close together.
Makes for better mail service and the life of our plants.

Thanks

9 so far... enough for the box. Or it will travel forever. Plus, I could continue to take names forever too and this could go on and on!

I would love to start the box Monday/September 8th- over the weekend temps are going to be 70* and 50's at night. Wonderful Chicago weather!
I'm getting the feeling that we are going to have an early fall. The leaves are changing and dropping already. I'm sure I can do trades until October, usually the end of Oct. So, I'm ready to start this- hopefully, temps are OK for everyone else. I know it's hot for the next few days over here (close to 90* everyday until the weekend cool off.)

Is everyone ready? I'll post a lineup- after I coordinate it later on tonight...
Remember, if anyone else wants to start another box, please feel free to post a new thread. I'll join!

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Ok, I gave it some time for any 'extras' to join in, no one showed any interest, I checked both emails... this swaps CLOSED!

Only because it's hard to add someone to the lineup when Everyone else is patiently waiting. ;) And we need to know almost exactly when the box will arrive so we don't leave it outside, or in a mail box. Make plans to have the box delivered to the PO if your area is in a massive heat wave. Everything should be fine, other swaps are starting too, I'm in another one that started this weekend. I'm going to use our big priority box- lined with a foil type insulation. It traveled well last time, so it should do ok this time too. Please feel free to add extras- especially if you can spare them or need to make room, or are grooming. All your plants- cuttings- leaves will get a good home. Someone will appreciate them! Please be generous! I want this to go really well, and I want Everyone to have a really good selection of violets/gessies!

25 items to start- let's keep that number or MORE. I'll include a list- of who to send to next. Mail it priority. Please post- when the box goes out, when it arrives so we can keep track.

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I'm going to work on this box Monday night- this weekends too busy! We are having a village wide garage sale this weekend, and I'm trying so hard to get some stuff ready. I'm decluttering some kitchen cabinets! I can't believe how much stuff gets tucked away! I feel like a squirrel! Multiples of everything, stuff I forgot about! ;)

So, Monday night I'll prepare the box and mail it out first thing Tuesday morning. I'll post the DC# when it goes out. Our weather is gorgeous! Actually chilly! By the end of the week (Friday 48*) for a low! leaves are really dropping!

Sue,
The box should be there Thursday! Usually priority takes 2 days.

Back home to Deb...

Ok the box was mailed- it's a treasure chest of cuttings, leaves, plantlets- all mixed gessies as promised! Streptocarpus, streptocarpella, petrocosmea, episcias, violets, kolheria! Many varieties are very hard to find! The petrocosmea is a species 5!

Sue,
Have fun picking and choosing! :). I know I would love to get this box (if I didn't already have the stuff! Lol!) Lots of it was picked up from gessie shows!
And some of the plants were expensive!

Everyone- try to keep it really desirable! Replace plantlets, cuttings with plantlets or small plants. And feel free to add more leaves, varieties! Let's make this really worth the postage! I'll see how this goes- and maybe start another? I just ordered a bunch of violets, so will have plenty of leaves to share! ;)

Please post confirmation numbers- what you took (so we can all be jealous!)
And when the box arrives and is shipped out.

I want everyone really happy---- please be generous!

Thanks so much for swapping! You're all the best! ;)

Friday delivery! Sent by priority., 2 day lol!
Hmmm, why Friday!
Sometimes they show up a day sooner, watch the tracking!

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I should add- feel free to add just violets, after all violets are what we collect! If they are the only thing you grow-
And you want yo to try 'other gessies' it's fine. Add plantlets in exchange for cuttings, violet leaves for the primulina leaves! I added variegated primulina, named leaves! And Ms. Beige, Tsu Ann baby primulina! Plus others I won't post the names to!

Just add what you can- and if it turns into an all violet swap- great! I'm sure I hooked others into growing/expanding collections!

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

It sounds fabulous, Deb!!! We're supposed to have snow Thursday, so Friday might be better anyway. I'll keep track though. Violets are all I have, but I have some pretty ones, I think.

Thank you for getting this going, and for sharing such an awesome assortment! I'm nearly drooling!!!

Sue

P.S. Cork, I'll try to leave something nice for you. :)

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Sue,
I'm so glad you are OK with other gessies. I was a little worried I added too many "other than gessies" named varieties. :) I tried to make this really fun/different, and give others a chance to grow different things other than violets. Violets are what's needed to this box, so thanks for adding leaves, plantlets, whatever you add!

I love growing different things- that's what get's me in trouble. Any cutting goes straight in soil, bagged by a baggie or placed under one of those domed plastic containers. Cuttings, plantlets love extra humidity to do well for the first few weeks. Nothing I sent is hard to grow. That's what's so neat about some of the stuff. A primulina leaf goes directly in soil just like a violet, so does an episcia. Episcia takes longer- but will produce by leaves. I've done them- in a salad type container... and just waited, eventually babies appear by the mother leaf, just like a violet. With the Kohleria, they do cuttings really well- again just place in soil, cover with a baggie for the first few weeks until rooted. Or do the community tray- black bottom, with a clear cover for a few weeks (from any local home depot/menards $2 for both.) Kohleria eventually make corms- little bulbs in the soil. You then either share cuttings, or corms.

Snow- yikes! I I thought 40's were bad in my area! Good thing we started the swap! Who knows what kind of Fall we are all in for! Seems to me- to be a really chilly Fall!

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Received this wonderful box of goodies today! It was snowing, but the lady brought the box to the door...& left it outside & didn't knock. No damage though, to the box or contents.
Deb, I sent you an email about a few of these leaves. I'll post tomorrow, & let you know what I'm keeping.
Sue

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Snow! And you were afraid of sending it when the temps were too warm . . . . :)

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

OK...I kept 15 bags, & replaced them with 14 avs. & 1 Gessie. 2 Streptocarpellas; Blue Angel & Concord Blue, 3 Streptocarpus; Blue Mars, Cat Nap, & Isis. 1 Petrocosmea Sp5, 2 Kohlerias; Ruby & Queen Victoria, 1 Episcia, Karlyn, & 6 avs.; Blue Mist Russian, Mellow Mist, Mac's Rapturous Rhapsody, Orchid Magic, Little Ebony, Cajun's Swamp Trail

George, the box is headed your way! Tracking info 9114 9999 4423 8529 4839 99

Thank you so much, Deb! I hope everyone has as great a selection as I did!

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Hello all! I have a request to make. I just found out that I have to have knee surgery on the 22nd. Would it be possible to switch with either Minal, so that I can get the box before surgery, or with either Brunhilda or Chiqui so that I can have a chance for my knee to heal enough to get around. Right now it's looking like the box will head my way within a day or two of the surgery. I know this throws a monkey wrench into the mix ~ sorry . . .

Vikki

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Forgot to say I put in multiples of the violets that I had more of. Please don't look down your nose at the MI plants I put in. They are some of the healthiest, happiest violets I have.

Sue

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Sue,
I didn't expect the box to arrive until Friday! They had Friday listed on the receipt. ;) So, I didn't check the thread, or emails until today. I'm glad it arrived early! I have first class- but need to clean out my computer desk to find it! It's here somewhere! When my Mom died, I accumulated so many papers- my desk is a mess! Please post the violets here that your looking for the descriptions of, and hopefully someone will post the official descriptions. I'm just not sure if I can clean out my desk fast enough (this week is the village wide garage sale) and I'm soooo busy!

Little ebony is so cute and growing so tiny! I would love an official description of it too! ;) Cajun's swap trail is one of Belinda's "Cajun" babies! I love that one- just for the goofy name!
Your going to LOVE the Kohleria! Mine are so hearty! Place cuttings in soil/bag or dome them and that's it, tubers will grow eventually by the soil line (in the soil) they are gorgeous when in bloom! I should add the bag or dome only stays on until you see firmness/evidence of roots. I'm glad your trying other gessies! At shows, some were $20 a plant/more, $6 for a cutting!

Vikki,
Please email George- and have him send YOU the box, then you send it to Minal. I already sent the 'order' list- but if George just ignores it and sends the box to you, then it will work out! Please talk with him! Because he's the one that's going to make out the label. ;) I wish I would of known earlier- I would of changed order of the list. Knee surgery, My Husband had it- your not going to want anything to do with violets for a few weeks!

Yay- our swap started- even with it snowing, LOL! Let's keep this going quickly!

So much fun reading what's chosen from the box!

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Ok, I'll contact George. Yup, I wish I had known about it earlier too. Surgery really wasn't part of my plan right now but I've got to get this knee fixed ~ meniscus tear. :(

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Does anyone have descriptions for "Little Ebony", Cajun's Swamp Trail, or Orchid Magic?

Thanks for all the how-to advice, Deb.

Sue

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Little Ebony - deep, royal blue, semidouble pansies. Black-green, semiminiature foliage, (user's database). But I don't know about the other two.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Thanks, Vikki. Sorry to hear about your knee. Hope things go well. Keep us posted okay?

The description for Little Ebony really pleased my daughter, who seems to be as seriously addicted as I am.

Sue

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I have my violets growing in a cooler- basement with t8 lights. The leaves seem to remain smaller, grow slowly. I'm in the process of moving violets to their own bedroom! I'm going to have a violet room- upstairs, and keep the basement grow area too for other gessies that love cooler temps!
That's why I'm looking to expand my violet collection. I'm going to have a few new shelving units to fill! :). Plus I picked up two aero garden units for babies/plantlets.

I called it- cajun's swap trail- you can tell what I'm thinking about! It's swamp! Not swap! Lol!

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Orchid Magic description from FC2:
"Semi-double purple orchid/wide white edge. Dark olive green, plain". J. Eyerdom.
Cajun's Swamp Trail is not listed on FC2 yet.

 o

Thank you!
Sue

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I just mailed the box to Minal. Sorry I do not see Vikki post until this morning.
I put a lot of AV leaves into the box. Maybe 8 or 10 of the same. You can take out a couple and forward the rest.
Thanks for a lot of fun. Now I have to put down my selections.

New tracking number is: 9114 9011 2308 6895 1366 16

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Ok, so who can I switch with later down on the list? With this unexpected knee surgery coming up this Monday, there's no way I'll be able to gather up, package and ship let alone pot up leaves next week - which is when the package would be coming from Minal. Maybe between Chiqui and Eileen OR Eileen and Kathy?

Cora
O. Anika

Pictures of them are on WWW.my violet.com/varieties.

Please tell us what else you took from the box, as that's part of the fun! Thanks.

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

George:
Descriptions from FC2

Rhapsodie Cora: "Single-semidouble white frilled/dark purple patches. Medium green, pointed, glossy, hairy, scalloped". (Holtkamp).

I don't think Rhapsodie Anika is listed in FC2. It is also from Optimara/Holtkamp. It is a frilled bicolor red & white bloom with medium green leaves.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Instead of mixing things up, Minal, just go ahead and send the box on to me. I'll figure out some way of getting it done. I can always teach my husband a thing or 2 about snipping leaves and boxing things up. This way it won't confuse things. It'll also give me something to look forward to while I'm just sitting around.

Vikki

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Thanks George!, I will keep an eye out for the package...looks like I'll get it on Thursday. So I will go ahead and skip Vikki and send the package to Brunhilda.

Best of luck with the knee surgery Vikki and speedy recovery!!! Our wishes are with you. Hopefully someone further down the list can ship you the leaves.

Minal,
Glad you found some neat selections!

George,
Thanks for posting the VISUAL pic! Wow, nice plants, leaves! It's fun hearing about what's in the box and what's picked! :)

Go RR--- Go! Weather's been perfect lately! Fall is here!

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Kinda last call if anyone else wants to start a Fall RR. Just checking-- no pressure. ;) IF you were thinking/debating- now's your chance, post a new thread. It's already the 20th/Sept. The box would travel, through October- and that's really about it for 'safe' violet shipping. Major violet shippers end shipping in Nov. And do- heatpacks/fiberglass anytime after the end of Oct.
Also, if you do a swap, limit the participants. Usually 2 per week- (2 box stops) and 4 weeks left- 8 participants to do a safe shipping swap. Temps dive super bad in November. Frozen violets = not happy traders, LOL!
So- just a quick thought, reminder...

Deb

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I'd love to start one, but I don't have enough named violets to do a box. Maybe I can in the spring though. I have lots of gorgeous things growing! :)

George, thanks for sharing the fun! I'm happy to see your well-cared-for selections.

Thanks for sharing your choices with us, Minal. I couldn't find descriptions for buckeye legal tender or rebels beck though.

Hope all things go well for Vikki tomorrow.

So glad your surgery went well! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I hope there is/was a really good selection of leaves, plantlets in the box! I want Everyone to really enjoy our RR's! This one is going fast- the weathers cooling off in most areas, Fall's here!

Please Everyone- be generous in packing the box, it's fun to get it when there is a good selection!

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I kept Girelda but can't find any info on her. Or is it Cirelda? But it looks like a 'G'.

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I had to replace the box because it looked like an elephant sat on it, picked it up, turned it on its side, and sat on it AGAIN!!!! The leaves came through it just fine for the most part (some snapped off stems but I attempted to plant what was left), but sadly 2 of the 4 Little Crystal plants didn't. There were also a few baggies of brown liquid that looked like they used to hold Rob's Zipper, Michelle, Jolly Eyes and strep Atsy Hama.

I did keep one of the Little Crystal plants and leaves from Rebel's Beck, Ma's Toxic Spill, Rob's Ruff Stuff, Royal Baby, Rob's Silver Spook, Buckeye Sketch Artist, Buckeye Love's Caress, Little Ebony, Blue Eyed Russia, Looking Glass, Wrangler's Dixie Dawn, Grandma's Love, and Buckeye Legal Tender.

There's 30+ varieties in the box, so enjoy Brunhilda!!

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Good, I'm glad there is still a good selection. Wow, nice choices!
I never heard of Rebel's beck (and I thought I knew of all of them!) I love Rob's Silver spook, it can get really highly variegated! I have little ebony- really cute! Wrangler's have neat weird foliage- I like them too! And good old Buckeye's! Another one of my 'oldie' favorites!

Cirelda! A trailer.. I purchase it, lose it, find leaves of it in the back of the plant shelf, lose it, lol! I usually lose it because of plucking too many leaves at once for boxes! I usually always have it somewhere, hidden on a shelf!

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

OK got the box and this is what I kept:

Added 8 new varieties.

Chiqui - its on its way to you tomorrow! There's lots of minis in the box - tiny ones!

Enjoy!

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I received the box this afternoon at 6:00 p.m., too late to reship today. Some of the baggies were in pretty bad shape. It's still very hot here and the box must have been in the postal truck for a while because it was warm when I received it. Will repack it in the morning and send out tomorrow to Eileen. Will post what I kept and provide the tracking number.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

This is the new tracking number going to Eileen this morning: 9405503699300386032267.
There were some very nice Buckeye's as well as other leaves. This is what I kept: B. Love's Caress, B. Extravaganza, B. Scrumptious, Mac's Westwind Whispering, Rococco Rose, Opt. Little Crystal (didn't think it would make another trip), Primulina Aiko & Opt. Romance (on my wish list!), Thanks to Deb and everyone else who shared their plants and leaves for this RR.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Chiqui,
I'm glad you found some neat varieties in the box! Buckeye's are always a neat 'treasure' to find! I'm so confused as to what's going on with boxes- and contents arriving in poor shape/dead! I'm not sure if it's because either the packages get passed on, or the stuff was in the box too long and just wasn't chosen? Or if it's from too much tossing- and leaves get bruised/rot?
Several RR's are having problems. One of them had LOTS of rot due to someone adding soaking wet paper tips. I'm sure the intention wasn't to send soaked papertowel tips, but the leaves rot when moisture's added, so when they start to rot, more moisture ends up on the tip/leaves. Bags and bags of leaves needed to be tossed! You can't save a leaf if it's totally rotted (unless it's just beginning on the tip or small spot in the middle, end of tip, etc.) rotted parts cut off easily with a razor blade and then get dipped in a cinnamon. Leaves shipped dry- can last for weeks! Seriously, I've had leaves come back to me from the RR's I start and they are FINE! A little dry, but if soaked in warm water, pinch of sugar, they usually plump back up and are OK. Also, when I purchased the Silverglades from Sylvia Harrison, the leaves were in transit 15 days by mail (in a brown envelope) the entire collection! ALL survived! I didn't lose one leaf! Some were soaked overnight- by morning looked great. So my question to Everyone- what are your thoughts? How can we make the RR's better? Any suggestions?
It's so disappointing to open a package of rotted leaves, and know you have to replace most.

Send dry- #1 if you feel the leaf is delicate, a dry papertowel can be added. I've done that before... I've also washed a leaf if it needed it and then wrapped it with a dry to absorb even more moisture. Again, adding nothing to the papertowel. Primulina's can handle a tiny bit of moisture, probably because the leaf is so thick, streps too. But- if in a box for weeks, I'm not sure? Usually they are the first to get 'picked' again, any suggestions, observations?

I don't want RR's to be a thing of the past, where no one feel's like it's not worth it. Let's try to make them better. Post some thoughts....

I know leaves get stressed in the heat, so I try to put the warmer states last. Our temps in Chicago came way down last night. 41* low for Saturday!

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Deb: I agree that leaves should be sent completely dry. They seem to last longer and have less rot. I am way down south, south of Miami, and our temperatures are still pretty high (high 80's and low 90's). I normally get my mail before noon but my regular mailman must be on vacation so my mail is being delivered very late in the afternoon, around 6:00 p.m. By that time, the box has probably been in a hot truck for hours and that may have contributed to a lot of the damage. I was in that other RR that had the leaves in baggies with water. A lot had to be thrown out. But even so there were still some good leaves left and for the cost of shipping a box we can still get to add new varieties to our collections so I do think the RR's are worth it.
The box went out this morning to Eileen, I think she is in central Florida. I added styrofoam to the new box for extra protection and they are covered with an insulated bag as well. Hopefully, this should help with a little more protection for the contents.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I started the box out with a silverlined type of insulation. Many have used it in the RR's before. Hopefully, it was in the box, for some sort of protection. Lined styrofoam's great- thanks!

That's how I feel too- there usually are so many leaves that you'll always get some varieties. And lose some too. For some reason, this season- Many are going rotten, seems more than usual! We lost an entire box at VV's RR. That was due to some sort of accident. Not really sure- I'm assuming the box was smashed, because nothing made it alive!

Rot-- anymore suggestions? Comments? Ship dry! That's all I can really think of!

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I also think that sending leaves dry is the best bet. Sometimes the leaves are wrapped in wet tissue. The last RR had a some of these. I took a few and when I unwrapped the damp tissue, the leaves were turning mush. I trimmed off the rotted part and stuck the top of the leaves in my potting mix. If they make it, so be it. I think we still get a bargain with these RRs. Where can you get such a selection of violets for just postage. I think the Spring RRs ended up will less loss because of the milder weather. This summer has been brutal in most of the country. Even with the problems we've had, I will still participate. Love a challenge to get the leaves to send up plantlets. And thanks to you, Deb, for starting this one off with great selections.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I love RR as it gives me an opportunity to get a wide variety of different types of AVs. The last round robin I was in there wasn't much that were still in good shape as I was at the end of the lost but I faired better in this one. Are the minis' more delicate? I don't grow any but they didn't look in the best of shape.

In my very limited expierenc

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Avs do tend to be more fragile than some other plants but I also agree that you can't beat the price for building up ones collection. I understand the risks I'm taking and am willing to take the risk of getting a box of mush in return in hopes of getting some nice new plants out of it.

I for one don't want to see these rrs end and will keep signing up for them.

As far as how to send leaves, I've had the best luck just slipping a DRY leaf into a bag (wet or damp leaves sealed up in a bag will cause rot everytime). I've gotten them with just the cut end wrapped around with slightly damp strip and of paper towel and the damp end wrapped in plastic or foil to keep the moisture away from the leave and they were fine. But I've also gotten them where the whole stem was wrapped in wet towel and the dampness did in the whole leaf. The only time I wrap is if there are roots involved and I wrap them so that the moisture is confined only to the roots.

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I remember reading somewhere that a vendor shipped leaves dry and removed all the air so leaves seem vaccum packed. It kept the leaves from breaking and rotting - has anyone tried?

Brunilda

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

I wish I would have known this before I added my stuff. I don't think I added moisture to the leaves, but I know I wrapped the plantlets roots in damp paper towel. Is that the right way to send plantlets? I've sent leaves to a few people, wrapped with damp towel pieces, but they said they were fine. I'll stop doing it that way. Thanks for this info.
Deb, where did you find the silver insulation? I thought it was neat.
Thanks again, all of you, for teaching me things I wouldn't learn anywhere else.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

If they have roots (either leaves or plants) they seem to do better with moisture around the roots. I rip about a 1" strip of paper towel, moisten it and then squeeze out as much water as I can. I wrap that around just the root and then wrap that in either a strip of plastic wrap or foil. But that's the only time I add any moisture to an AV I'm shipping. 'm in SC and have successfully shipped all summer long. I just make sure I don't let them sit in the mail box and always take them to the post office for mailing.

It seems like mini leaves are the hardest to keep alive in shipping. I think it's because they're so small that any rot at all makes it almost impossible to salvage the leaf.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Brinilda: I actually like to add some air to the baggie because I think that it provides some cushioning for the leaves. But I guess everyone has their own way of doing things.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Hi Everyone,
Here is my two cents. I think I was 2nd or 3rd on the mailing list. When I received the box a lot of the smaller leaves were in bad shape. I have already lost two of the leaves and one plant that I kept, which does not happen to me very often. I loaded the box with a lot more leaves than I removed because I had them to spare. I did ship them dry.
Over the past month I have shipped more than 500 leaves with no problems, but they were only in transit 3 or 4 days. Most were Buckeye which are larger and more sturdy.
PLEASE DON’T STOP THE ROUND ROBIN BOXES. IT WAS A LOT OF FUN.
Starting in the northern states and then the southern seems to work, which is what you did. Was everyone at home when the RR box was delivered to your home? Do we need to limit the number of people on the mailing list? Just some if my thinking.
George/ Cork

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Aw shucks, George. Was it the little Modesty that didn't make it? I've lost 4 leaves already, and one more is on it's last lap. However, I feel like I still really got a great selection of goodies, and hope to participate in more RRs in the spring.
If I can replace something you really wanted, please let me know.

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

It's threads like this one that teaches others what to expect with a RR. And how to pack and send leaves. It allows you to vent a little- make solutions. Plus, it helps new traders out- it kind of prepares them that sometimes leaves do die, expect some loss, usually all the fantastic varieties available in the box outweigh the few that were lost. You can seriously build a gorgeous collection, just from doing RR's. With varieties that are lost- hard to find! You never know what's growing in someone's basement, or shoved in the back on a shelf! ;) A month or so ago I received a box with Lunar white lily in it! That one went for $200 something on ebay! I don't remember the exact amount! What's so rare about it, ? LOL! It's a white wasp bloom. I'm going to have to look it up again. I was so excited, grabbed
it because I just read about it on facebook (that it was going so high) but never really looked up the specifics.

See you never know what you can receive- for just POSTAGE! I think it's also the best way to pick up vintage ones. Many vendors went out of business over the years, and many of these older plants are lost. But- some are on shelves still, just waiting to be shared. So, to me- it's worth it. UPS and DOWNS.

Thanks for the suggestions, and feel free to post more. We need to talk about it, make solutions.

The post office has a commercial that said they are delivering on Sundays (boxes) I've never received a box yet on Sunday. Wonder when that's going to start. That would be really nice!

I picked up the foil like insulation at Home depot. I received a box from Rob's violets with it one time. I'm not sure if they still use it, it was a long time ago. It comes on a small bundle.

One of the biggest things to making a RR successful is communication. Tracking numbers posted, so others can make arrangements to be home when the package comes so it's not sitting in a hot/cold truck. Or have the PO hold the package for pickup if the temps are unstable.

Thanks Everyone for any thoughts posted!

Thank you everyone for doing this RR! It was a lot of fun sifting through the box!

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Question: a couple of the leaves were pretty limp that I kept. Is there anything you guys do to try and increase your chances of success with these? I put them in soil under a lid for now.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

When I get limp leaves, I make a solution of warm water with a little sugar. Then soak the leaves for a few hours. If they still are limp, I leave them overnight and pot up in the morning. I took some from the RR that were badly limp, but after a day soaking, and then potting up in moist mix, they look OK, so far. I wanted to take more, but didn't have enough to replace, so took the worst looking ones. I have done quite a few RRs and get pretty good results from the limp ones. Sometimes they don't make it, but it's always a chance they will survive and become spectacular plants.

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

One of the leaves I picked out was Rebel's Beck. Anyone have a description for it?

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Jumping in here because I've seen Rebel's Breck listed on Bluebird Greenhouses site. Its possible someone forgot the "r."

RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Our RR box arrived back here... The swaps over! Some perished/older stuff, and the last varieties that Kaity put in look great! I'm not going to go into a list- because more rotted than survived, and that's depressing. It's been a ROUGH trading season. Many swaps are having problems- cold is just as bad as heat.

Thanks Everyone that added- to the box! I'll be ready by spring (hopefully) to do this again. For now- I'm tired of m u s h y dead rotten leaves--- and tired of half dead boxes! ;(

Swaps over!!!!!!!!!!

I hope all of your leaves do really well- wishing you tons of blooms over the long winter! I'm going to hibernate! See you in the spring!

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Oh Deb, I'm sorry it didn't end well. I did a trade this week, and the violets arrived here all mushy and gross too, so I understand. Such a disappointment!

Thanks again for starting this off, and for including me. It was a great experience! Some of my leaves and starts are doing well, and some are just keeping me in suspence. :) It's part of the fun.

Sue

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Did we have too many people on the trade list?
Should we date the leaves we put in the box?
Maybe we should have two boxes (northern states and southern states)?
Anyone have some ideas to add.
Thanks
George/Cork

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Seem the minis seem to suffer most, perhaps the boxes for those specific types limited to a small group of people.

Dating the leaves sounds like a good idea. Do leaves fair better than babies?

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Sue,
Watching the leaves grow is really exciting! I'm sure they will do well for you! I'll do this again in the spring! :) Maybe this time with 2 boxes. This Fall trading season taught me that leaves really don't last much at all if water is added, so many neat leaves were lost to rot. And if in the box too long- stuff should be dated. That way you can decide what to 'save.' Know what to replace. Smaller swaps (less people per box) would be better for the varieties- quicker turn around.
George,
Good point! I followed someone a couple of times in a swap that lived in an area colder than mine- and then sent the box to a warmer area! More than usual rotted. So, it made me wonder if chill to heat stresses the leaves out terribly! Maybe doing the box (in the same climate) makes a lot of sense!

Brunhilda,
Yes minis/semis rot first, that's really true! Also, variegated leaves go quickly!
The variegation starts to rot! Always try to catch it with cinnamon. Use a sharp razor to cut it off. Scissors smash cells-

What I've learned the most this year, is you can't please everyone- eventually someone's going to complain-and be unhappy with your box! Take it lightly- always do your best! Pack a box you would love to receive- that's really all you can do! :) Lastly, if you receive brown cold dead leaves- don't blame anyone, it's the weather! Or the leaves are just delicate, and bruised during shipment! Stuff dies, be willing to take a chance! Replace what you can in each box, and have fun! We all grow violets because we love them! You just never know what 'must have' leaf can be in that box! :)

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

Deb, I was not complaining, but was hoping we could all work together for a better result.
I am still in for next year. I like the surprise of getting something new, or something I would not have ordered.
George
ps Deb
Watch for a box to arrive for you, Thursday or Friday. Surprise!!!

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

George,
((Hugs)) I know your not complaining! I'm just trying to bring up topics to discuss, the ups and downs of RR boxes. And yes, talk about with all of you to try to find a solution, get ideas, thoughts. To make all of our RR's go smoothly... Everyone makes this RR work, it's not only me- I just start them. :)

More ideas? Thoughts? I think if we go in the swap with an attitude realizing that this is live plant material we are dealing with, no guarantees. The plants/plantlets/leaves are in the box- take what you want, replace with whatever- for just postage. Everyone will always be happy with each box!

Deb

 o
RE: wanted: fall round robin..

George,
Thank you sooooo much for my gift/box! George sent a really nice box to replace some of the mushy swap leaves. This was such a nice gift! :)

George sent...leaves, and a plant!
A really pretty no ID- with dark/wine mottled lighter/ wine blooms, very pretty!
and leaves from- Baby's breath, Buckeye best friend, Gillian,
Ma's midland fantasy, Maverick's faded jeans, Rebel's peppermint,
Buckeye love caress, Apache blanket, Ethel's wild side, Buckeye ballet master! I had many of these previously, so am so happy to have them again!

Thank you- George! I'll share leaves in the spring from all of these for our next RR!
