Plants always confound us

I am a quite serious gardener. From time to time I'll bring home a pretty pot of african violets which I treat like a bouquet of flowers since I can never seem to get them to live. The thing is my mother, who doesn't garden, buys these things on sale at the supermarket and hers do wonderfully. So I've always tried to do what she does... give them low indirect light, don't water too frequently, seldom fertilize ...and they live forever and bloom like crazy. I recently bought a plant on sale at the supermarket but decided to check GardenWeb for any growing hints...imagine my suprise.
