Patented African Violets

A few months ago, I purchased a few sets of Optimara violet leaves from Selective Gardener. I'm aware that many of Optimara violets are patented.

My question is, am I allowed to sell/give away the babies from these leaves as long as I do not propagate any further?

I e-mailed Selective Gardener a few weeks ago, and asked the same question, but I have never received a reply. (Sigh.)

Also, do you know any patented varieties other than those from Holtkamp? Is there any way to know which varieties are patented?

RE: Patented African Violets

On one forum we had a long discussion about Optimara's patents. Lorraine from Optimara came on and explained a lot about this and why they do not put name tags in every plant.

She says as long as growers reproduce the patent plants and sell/give them away, it is ok. But when big sellers sell them in large number they must buy a name tag from Selective Gardener (they used to cost 3 cents a nametag)

So if you are a small grower you are all right to sell a few plants.

Do inquire from Optimara or Selective Gardener in case their rules have changed.
