New babies arrival - repot?

My new babies finally arrived!(Ma's Corsage, Ma's Crime Scene, Ma's Fat Froggie, Ma's Midland Blue and Apache War Bonnet.) From The Violet Barn. What a nice variety of leaves! (not to mention flowers). Apache War Bonnet leaves really stand out!

Anyway, all have their potted date on them. Most are August and September of '08. However Midland Blue is April of '08. It's also blooming. I can see the larger leaves have been removed and there is about 1/2" of stem. My Oyama pots have arived, but am waiting for my wicking potting mix to arrive in a separate box from The Violet Barn. So, when it arrives, should I repot Midland Blue? Remove the buds/flowers (SO many and more coming on.) I got 1 1/2", 2 1/2" and 3 1/2" Oyama planters. Midland Blue is in a 2 1/2" pot now. Go with same or to go the 3 1/2" OR see how big the root ball is and then make the decision?

My book "Growing violets for show" has also arived so will be reading, reading, reading!

Congrats! I know the feeling, I am always excited when I get a Violet Barn box in the mail.

Hi TamiSue, I also order from the Violet Barn.I just received a order on february 3rd it was a birthday present to myself. I ordered 10 plants and yesterday I ordered another 4.When they arrive I leave them alone so they can get settled into their new home.and just yesterdy I repotted 3 of them when I think that they may need to be repotted I squeeze the pot and if the dirt pulls away from the side of the pot I repot. I hope this helps.-Terri

Measure their leaf span - and if it is close to 3 x 3.5" - repot into 3.5 oyama.

Oyama mix should be wicking mix plus 1/4 perlite at least. As far as I remember Rob's mix - it is pretty heavy on vermiculite - so I would add 1/3 perlite -and do not forget perlite to fill the bottom piece of the Oyama pot.

To be safe - after you repot - be really careful on watering - do not fill reservoir to the upper mark until the plant catches up. In my experience VioletBarn plants with removed bottom leaves - just shoot out in a hurry - they are strong and have good root system. When you will be repooting - use the mold method - we discussed it in a previous post - just put it a bit deeper so you can add soil to cover the neck.
