warmth vs light

Hi AV lovers!

I have a question about the light and "warmth". I have some AV babies in the office and as I want them to have lots of light I actually put my lamp right above them. (5 inches) for 8 hours a day, when I am at work. The problem is that this lamp also produces warmth and I am not sure if it is good for AV's. Obviously 5 inches is not that close but still they are getting some of the warmth, I can feel it when I put my hand down there.

What do you think about this solution? Do you think they would be better off with less light (regular office light) and no warmth from the lamp?

What type of light is it? People often use fluorescent lights as a grow light for AVs, but incandescent lights don't emit the right spectrum of light (generally) to promote growth. The extra warmth provided is probably unnecessary, and potentially detrimental. African violets are happiest as standard room temperatures, somewhere around 70*F. Above 80*F many start to go downhill. You're probably ok with less light and no warmth from the lamp. If the leaves begin "reaching" upward you will need to provide more light, but if they stay flat they're happy.
