Frank, there are two different thoughts on how to wick. I put at least an inch of perlite in bottom of pot. I use mason twine (18 grade) and string it from bottom hole to top of pot. I secure the end in a slit at the top. I use solo cups for small babies.
There is the other way some people wick. They put one inch of perlite on bottom. Thread the wick thru bottom and circle the end around top of perlite. Add some potting mix, place plant, and fill in with remainder potting soil.
I'm going to try the second method next time I have some babies to transplant.
My violets are wicked and placed on polyester mats in trays.

I have been wicking my plants for over 10 years now and I thread my wick (4 ply Acrylic for stds and 2 plies for minis and semis) through a piece of plastic screening which I use to keep the soil from falling through the holes and then across the bottom of the pot and up and over the side. I use a mix of 1-1-1 which is very light for my wicking. It works for me. Hopefully through your reading and experimenting you will find what works for you in your situation.
