That's a great idea, Mary. I used 3' shelves for years too and was always trying to rig ways to extend the edges to use all the light too. It was a metal stand so hanging wasn't so much an issue.

Oddly my 4' shelf was on the back porch in the package and eventually went to the basement. It's a nice rack - holds a lot of junk.

We just made a little stand out of pvc to use for seedlings.

You can seal the boards with furniture finishing wax. Wipe on a good coat then take a hair dryer on high heat and heat the wax until it is hard and looks like glass (mirror finish). No rubbing necessary with the hair dryer/heat. The reason to use this is it is easy, non toxic to plants and you can take the hairdryer and reheat, re-shine the wax or put on another coat yearly or as needed. It gets rid of any mites or other larva, eggs that might hide in the cracks. It also looks really good. I dislike polyurethanes for several reasons but wax works well to protect the wood and plant
