Take this with a grain of salt - I haven't got anything on wicks right now, because I didn't have the guts to leave my 'test subjects' be long enough to see if it was actually working...
But it was my understanding that it was more about the potting medium than wick size. Even a small wick could, in theory, load up a dense medium with enough water to drown the plant. Of course, if you consider evaporation etc, it may be possible to offset a slightly dense medium with a smaller/slower wick.
And now I am probably overthinking a simple thing.
Let's wait for someone with actual experience to chime in ;-)

I think Karin hit the nail on the head. If your minis/ semi's are staying too wet, lighten up your soil. I use the same wicks (regular 3-ply acrylic yarn) on everything-from monster standards to micro-minis.
