I have used under cabinet lights on small plant stands for awhile now. If I had a choice, I would not bother with them, but d/t my small space, and my inability to be happy with just a few violets, this is what I have learned. If you want blooms, you will need 2 lights per shelf, and the plants will need to be quite close to the lights. It will take some experimenting to learn who will be happy where. I raise mostly mini's, not sure how this would work with standards, esp. the ones that require high light levels. I also wick, as the plants dry out very quickly in this set up. Thanks for your reply. yes I also wick my violets. I only have 10 for now and 5 are on the bakers rack to have the light put on them as an experiment. The others are in front of a south facing window with a sheer curtain over the window. They are all doing great just no blooms. But then again they may be resting. They are all noids and most were blooming at the time i bought them and they are all still alive. I didn't think I would ever get to the place that I would even consider adding lights. I figured they should bloom in front of a window like grandmothers for years and years have done but now I am wanting to see the difference.
