Teeny roots on standard AV

I received this Ma's Arctic Sky from Rob's in May. It came in the little green square pot, I didn't know to re-pot right away, so I just left it. As soon as started fertilizing (Schultz--I know but I've ordered some Dynagro now), it went to blooming. It seemed to have slowed down, and although was looking quite healthy, I decided to re-pot it into an Oyama. There's always this feeling w/ a healthy plant that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and it's doing so well, but from what I understand now, it's good to put it into a lighter mix when you get a new plant. When I turned the pot into my hand, I was shocked that the bottom half of the mix fell away, and there was basically no root to this plant. What?! How could it blom and look so happy? I've put it into the 2.5" Oyama (wish I had another 1.5" but I don't) with the words in my ears, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it...." It was doing so well, should I have just left it?
