The "soil" in the jar is actually crumbles of charcoal. We have a fire place in the yard ... many burnt woods turn into charcoal. I plugged in a large leave and a small leave. The large one disappeared. The small one turned into the small plant. The jar has been placed in a north facing deck for a couple months.
