Question on Pot Sizes

Ok, this may be a dumb question, but I really honestly have no idea. How are pots measured? I've got a few plants that I know are going to need repotted in the near future, and I'm not sure what size pots they're in, either because they're in the pot they came in, or I purchased the pot so long ago, I can't remember what size I bought. I know the rule about the plant being 3 times the size of the pot ...

They are measured by diameter across the top of the pot.
