That may have been me, Lucille. Since the gnats episode, I now let my mats dry nearly completely before re-wetting. Still working on the best way to keep them damp though and not wet. I don't have the standard reservoir system.

Not sure if letting them dry out is always the best thing, because then the plants don't have any water to pull up- but I haven't had any recurrence of the gnats . As long as I keep an eye on things, the plants don't have any issues.

That's certainly what I would do. It may be that once you get rid of the gnats and don't over saturate the mats, that that's all that needs doing. I was definitely over-saturating for a while.
