AV Mutation...how did this happen?

I have 4 African violet plants that I started from leaf cuttings of the same plant. They were taken @ the same time. Of the 4 plants, only one of them (the most mature) is identical to the parent plant. The second oldest plant bloomed for the first time a week ago. Its blooms are the same color as the parent plant, but are ruffled instead of smooth. The leaves of this plant are triangular in shape & scalloped at the edges, whereas the parent plant had round/oval leaves with smooth edges. The 2 smaller plants haven't bloomed yet, but are displaying leaves that differ from both the parent plant & the 2 other plants. They are burgundy on the underside & have burgundy variegation on the topside of the leaves. It's sorta cool, but how'd it happen?

Hi,
Many AV's ara mot stable especially the plants found in supreermarkeats. Moost hybridizers take pride in their work and run the plants through 3 generations to test them to make sure they are stable/ With that said. Where did you get the AV u were speaking about? In any case u now have a couple different varieties.

Thanks for the replies. I got the parent plant from my workplace 2 years ago. It was purchased from Wal-Mart 3 mths. before I took it home. It wasn't anything amazing, as you can imagine, but I just couldn't leave it there to die. I'd never grown African violets before, so I did a lot of research. The plant developed double crowns & I ended up dividing it & taking some leaf cuttings. Anyway, I'm totally addicted to AV's now & want to learn as much as possible. I'll post some pics soon. HI again Becca,
If you wnat to avoid getting "sports" my suggestion would be to order plants from a hybridizer or a reputable dealer in AV's. Better yet, look for a violet show in the area where you live and I am sure you will be able to find things there. If you want to find clubs that are having shows, check with AVSA or email me and I can possibly help.
