Stem with seed pod turning brown/soft

I just came in to find the flower stem with a seed pod has started to turn brown and feels soft rather than the healthy, firm, green that it was on Friday. Is it time? Do I need to cut off the pod? Or should I let whatever is happening continue on its own? I'd like to salvage the seeds if at all possible. Anyone have any experience on this?

Whatever is happening to the stem is progressing. Nearly the entire bloom stalk is brown now. It feels rubbery. I hope this is what it's supposed to do, and not rot!!!

For anyone else looking for information, I dug this up. This is the best site I've found with information about hybridizing.
