You probably have a regular AV, but it is possible you have a trailer, which is meant to grow multiple crowns. Did your plant have a name or description? If so, I could check and see what kind it is.

Without seeing a picture of your plant (do you have two separate plants, a big sucker, or a two-headed monster?) it's hard to give exact advice on what to do. You can definitely start leaves to grow your own new plant as insurance. Don't be afraid of hurting the plants - the mother will be very happy to get rid of her mooching kid. The best time is now. The sucker will need to be rooted, but AVs do that very easily and you'll have two pretty plants. It's better to remove the blooms from the sucker while it's rooting. You can leave flowers on the mother plant if you want when you repot it. The link below has lots of info on growing AVs, including identifying, removing, and restarting suckers. Good luck!
