Final Count!

I have just finished with my inventory. I officially have 318 varieties of violets. Not plants; varieties. I know. It's a sickness.

Wow linda, that's impressive. Do a few of them share your bed? LOL. I mean if that's variety I know you have a lot more because I don't think you would keep just one plant fr a variety. VELLETA.

Wow, I think I have 5, maybe 6, varieties. 20 AVs total or so...
Waiting on some of my bigger plants to die, so I can expand - you know, the ones that were meant to become bonsai that ended up as shrubs.... Or the ones given to me for various reasons ("would you like ANOTHER huge spider plant? Here you go, all your windows look so covered in plants, you must like them....") At least I quit planting each and every lemon and avocado seed... Now that was an addiction!
    (Shhhh don't mention leaf cuttings...)

While you are likely correct, Vel, I can say that I personally do limit myself to one specimen of each plant hybrid or species most (but not all) of the time. In my case it is quite simple -- do to major space limitations -- I can either indulge in my extremely eclectic plant tastes by having a large variety but limit myself to one of each type (again in most cases) OR I can have lots of a particular hybrid/species but far less variety.

Lots of AV "shrubbery" you have there, Linda!

I have NO space but saw this at the nursery. The purple thumbprint one (all NOID's) is much prettier than this picture. The problem is that they're all packed in there with loose peat. If I'm doing a temporary grouping, I leave them in their own pots and cover the top with moss. Should I separate them now or let them finish their first round of blooming?

Sorry! That was supposed to be a separate thread! It does go along with the 'final count' in that these guys push me over 50 varieties. A pittance in comparison, Linda!

    Hi Linda
That is a great number, a perfect amount! Especially
when you are in the biz with your landscaping background.
People who sell AVs probably have that many. I get a lot of vicarious enjoyment out of reading about other people's collections. I learn a lot that way, also.
Presently, I have about 62 varieties, but about ten are
Optimaras. I tend not to keep those for long, using them
as gifts or decorations for events. I would like to have
more specialty varieties once I get the collection more
organized in the limited space allowed for them.

The actual plant count is more like 75 because
I keep two or three of those I like a lot.

The small plants from leaves are in a separate room,
out of sight. I am keeping the collection on
the small side for now to provide
    "consistent care," as Annie says.

Since joining this forum and a club,
I am enjoying my collection much more. Learning the history of the hybridizers makes the hobby so much
more fascinating than just having a bunch of pretty
    plants.

Linda, no more hanging from the ceiling on Saturday
    nights!

I am wondering about Irina's acquaintance who has
    3,000, if she sells them.

To JLM, That "thumbprint" looks like Optimara's Cora,
a two-tone orchid and purple. One of my favorites of the Optimaras.

Better to have 318 varieties than 318 plants of 8 varieties, right?

    That's how I see it.

With so many pots, how do you manage to water them and water them as required? Some of them may be in different size pots.

    Zuk,

One word-wick-watering. (Or is that two???) ;)

It's one word, for a two-step process (the wick and the
    reservoir)!
I got some wick pots from Optimara that work well
for individual plants, and look tidy. Though they are
a bit pricey. they are called WaterMaid.
