Hi Pembroke,
If the leaf is very, very large, I will cut it into a square just for the sake of it fitting in a solo cup, and not toppling over. I am somewhat inconsistent in the way that I start leaves. If I am short on time, I will just recut the stem to about one and one half inches and stick in a clear, squatty 2 oz(for standards) and 1 oz (for SM/M) solo cup just under the soil. If I have plenty of time(rare), I will do as above, but cut the top 1/3 off the top of the leaf. This helps them produce babies faster. However, sometimes you get a dud leaf or a difficult variety and no no matter what you do, the process is SLOW!
My soil is barely moist. It has taken me quite a while to get the moisture level right to prevent rot!!! I cover the prop box and put it up high on the light stand about 6-8 inches from the lights.

pembroke, it's not hard to do. growhappy gave good instructions. It takes about six weeks before you see little mouse ears, so don't get discouraged. I usually use the aluminum lasagna pans from walmart. They have clear covers. And are airtight. I put them on the bottome of my plant shelf and forget about them. Two months later it's time to separate the babies from mama. Give it a try.

And as I've just learned, the reflected light from the aluminum goes to the plant, so it gets extra light.

Once you start doing it and see success you will be addicted!
