There is always room for one more?

Hi All,

Well I can't really explain why, but last week I started lurking on this forum and came to conclusion that Hoyas and Adeniums aren't enough for me! So I went to store and as recommended by many experienced people from this forum, before ordering any minis I would like to grow, got 3 optimara standards. Looks like I got Maine II, N.Carolina and nice burgundy red noid. There comes a question; white with purple edges (looks more blue on the picture) although a large plant, about 11-12 inches across, is in 6 in pot. Is it over potted? Should I move it to smaller pot, or at least same diameter but shorter? I'm in s.Florida, will be growing it with AC on most of the year with humidity around 60%.

Welcome to AV land!

Rule of thumb for potting: your pot should be 1/3 the size of your violet. If your violet is 12" across a 4" pot is appropriate.

yep you guys did a good job, DH wasn't even surprised when I went on av hunt! :)

Will pot it down, Can't really get it why optimara would spend more on larger pots and more soil, and over pot plants for sale!
Weekends are getting way to busy with plant chores, but I need couple more violets for experimenting. Need to make sure that all data collected from it will have statistical significance! ;)

Larger pots: easier shipping, easier handling, less spilled soil, more impressive to an unsuspecting buyer. It's sales and marketing not good growing. It's unfortunate because over-potting is one of the main causes of violet death. Then newbies get it into their heads that they can't grow violets and they miss out on so much fun and beauty.

Listen to Veleeta. We got her under our spell as well ;)

Hi linda, it lost another leaf so now its down to two plus the sml crown but they are firm and looks like they plan to stay so I guess it will be sticking around for the long haul. :). Thanks for asking. VELLETA.

Hi Aggie, great picture. North Carolina has red blooms, the one in your picture looks like mine. Not sure what the purple one is, but they are beautiful.
