Generally-dark leaves need more light than light ones-think about it-darker is harder for light to to penetrate than lighter leaves. Variegates need less than plain leaves, probably for the same reason and with my minis, I just follow the same idea-dark vs, light; variegates vs. plain.

Put your lighter ones at the end of your light tubes or in a darker window and do the same for your variegates. Also, variegates generally color up better in a cooler area. I put mine on a bottom shelf on my light stands.

And you're correct. This is just a starting point.
