Winter Sowing

Is anybody winter sowing in Alabama this year?
I've tried it in the past. Some plants come up during a warm spell and then die. Is it because I start too early-usually after Christmas?
This year I am thinking of doing side by side comparisons of WS and stratifying in my fridge.

I have done it in the past, planting at about that time, and did not have that problem. This year, I am not planting any ornamental seeds, so not winter sowing. OTOH, when I tried stratifying in my fridge, I had seeds sprout, had to throw them out!

I decided to winter sow and started 24 kinds of seeds in the first weekend of Jan. The first seedlings, purple Iberis, germinated this week!

I did plant some stuff this weekend, mostly perennial Helianthus and milkweeds, stuff that otherwise would get 30 days of stratification.
