You can still put out preemergent herbicides. As for the weed and feed...I wouldn't put it out. If it's the kind I am thinking about it kills the weeds you already have. Just be sure you get something with a preemerge in it. Scotts sell some of its fert. with Halts in it. Halts is really pendimethalin which is a preemerge. This should help prevent crabgrass and other summer weeds.

I think you've missed the major opportunity to put out a pre-emerge in much of Alabama, especially with our warm temperatures. I live in Huntsville and my husband and I are debating whether or not to apply any this winter; not when stuff is already starting to germinate.

Weed and Feed applications can be worse than a waste of time, depending upon where you live and what kind of grass you have. For example, a pre-emergent (which is in many weed and feed products) should be applied quite some time ago in the warmer locations, but fertilizer should not be applied to warm season grasses until April or even May! Warm season grasses can be harmed by early spring nitrogen applications.

The kinds of weeds you are having problems with makes a difference, too. Why don't you call your local ACES office and have a chat or schedule an appointment with one of the agents? Ask for the turf person! He/she may be able to help you get your grass in better shape so that weeds aren't so much of a problem for you. The weeds can be identified and an herbicide program, if any, can be suggested. Believe it or not, major weed infestations can be prevented without chemicals of any kind.
