I don't believe that it illegal (yet), in Alabama, to plant Chinese privet on purpose. But that doesn't mean that it should be planted.....ever. It is extremely invasive and harmful to the large expansive natural habitats we so love about Alabama. If you have ever seen how this disastrous shrub has taken over some of our most beautiful woodlands, you'd never even consider using this plant in your landscape.

It's listed on the Top Ten worst invaders by the Alabama Invasive Species Act (for plants).

We can't really make suggestions for you without knowing in what part of Alabama you live. It's a tall state with lots of very different climates and soils.

i agree with rhizo. i wish it was illegal to plant/sell. IMO, its the worst invasive plant in alabama. dont be tempted to use the variegated form either. it easily reverts to green and reseeds just like the standard form.

maybe try wax myrtle, yellow anise, or yaupon holly...of course depending on your site location, soil, and exposure.

NOOOOoooooo . . . . I pull hundreds of these wretched things out of my yard every year because our neighbor has an untended area at the back of his property that is overrun with them. They drop seeds on all the neighbors' property and are replacing the native plants. Even if you don't mind having them dropping seeds in your yard, please take pity on your neighbors and get rid of them!!!
