What to put in my water garden

Can someone tell me some good things to put in my water garden in North Alabama? Last year I tried lilies, but they did not spread and they got sick and turned brown and died. Looked like something had laid larvae on them. Anyway, my pond had no cover at all and algae took over and I had to drain it out. It'd be good to get my hands on some low-effort plant that will spread over the surface of the water.

did you know there is a pond and aquatic plant forum (linked below)at gardenweb?
that would be a good place to post this question.
i have a small, preformed watergarden and one plant that does very well for me is anacharis. can be found at most pet stores that sell aquarium fish and plants. it drops to the bottom in the winter and floats back up when the weather warms.
have heard that barley straw bundles placed in the water will help keep algae down but have not tried that.
