I had the same question awhile back. Terry suggested keeping my tubers in their container (I stored them in dry vermiculite). I have moved them to a warm spot in the house, as he suggested, and watered the container a little. I expect sprouts or "slips" to emerge soon, which are very easy to root.

I suppose if you have room to plant a whole big tuber and do not want to
propogate a whole bunch of new plants from the slips, you can just plant the big ol' tuber when the ground has warmed up, and the vine should come back just fine.

Just looked online to get info on propagating "sweet potato" vine. This is my first time to dig up the large fat tubers and want to keep the to replant next spring. your forum has given me some info already. Just replant the tubers. Im sure the plants I put in the ground this past spring were "tuberless". Any hints you have would be greatly appreciated.

I did just replanted the whole tubers I had last spring. They grew like crazy all
season--I thought one would take over the yard. When I dug them up to try to store them again this fall, however, two of them looked like swiss cheese. Although the plant looked fine, bugs were feasting on the tuber. So I've not
been able to save one for more than a year.

I too, just replanted them whole, and had wonderful vines grow from them. I haven't attempted to dig them up this year yet, so can't say if there are more tubers or what. I may try to dig them when the weather warms back up a bit, and see if they can be saved again.

Sweet potatoes are grown from slips, which are those little red/purplish stems which come out of them in early spring. Yes, the potatoes wear-out and become mealy if not re-grown from slips.
