Mountain Laurel

I'd like to know if anyone is growing this in the Montgomery area? What kind of growth habit does it have and is it really poisonous? I have grandkids and a mini dachshund to think about. But I love the looks of this plant in the books. Can't say that I have ever seen it in wild. But really considering it as a foundation plant at the front of my house.

i have not seen it in this area, not that it necessarily means it doesn't grow here. I have seen it growing WILD in NC, in the mountains outside of Asheville (my Gparents live up there) - and it is absolutely BEAUTIFUL this time of year.

I have it here in Birmingham, and it has been an extremely slow grower for me. I have had it for four years, and it just now put on a slight bloom for me. It is a native here as well. We were at Camp McDowell a few weeks ago, and it was everywhere in the woods and quite beautiful.
