plant swap

Most swaps seem to be in North Alabama - I live half way between Montgomery and Mobile - a friend and I are considering a fall swap here in Evergreen - any interest?

Alabama is a tall state and it's a long way from Huntsville to Evergreen and vice versa. Do we need to have two sets of plant swaps -- one for North Alabama (North of, say, Clanton) and one for South Alabama? TN, I think, has 3 for East, Middle, and West TN. Middle TN has a permanent location and it's own website, but I don't know about the others. Any thoughts?

Here is a link that might be useful: MTPS website

Several great Alabama GW members live down toward Montgomery, Wetumpka and Letohatchee. Personally I encourage anyone to organize a swap and I hope we can all work together and coordinate our dates so we can attend swaps in both areas. Due to football games, the dates may be harder to coordinate in the Fall than in the Spring.

glad to get some feedback - sorry to be so long in replying but for some reason I can't get the gardenweb on my computer at home so have to wait until I work on Tues & Wed.
We have set a date of Oct 9th - that is the same date as the Sausage Festival here in Evergreen so a double event - more info will be forthcoming.

Wish I were close enough to Evergreen to go to both swaps. I know y'all will have a good one. Don't eat too much sausage!

Guess we need to start separate threads for North AL swap and South Al swap.

ameliad, hello, I'm the one Terry (Tsmith2579) was talking about..I live in letohatchee..about 25mins north of greenville..I posted to have a swap at my GH's..but was told I live toooo far south....I love going to see everyone up north...but they just don't want to travel...LOL
I would love to join this swap....just drop me aline...
    thank you Jody

Ameliad, let me know what time of day you plan to swap. If you are later in the afternoon, I may leave the Alex City swap and join you. It is only 130 miles. If I don't have any trades for Alex City, I may plan to join you. I have some stuff I need to bring to Jody. A bunch of us came to Lynn Haller's house in Prattville a few years ago. Using Prattville as a reference point, it is 81 miles from Bham to Prattville and 87 miles from Prattville to Evergreen. Maybe we can all meet in the Montgomery area in the future. Several of us have been encouraging having the swap in different areas so we can meet new friends and make it convenient for people from different areas to participate. We've been to Talladega, Gadsden, Prattville and next looks like Alexander City. We understand the roads run in two directions. Planning for the Fall swap usually includes planning around Alabama and Auburn football games. Maybe the north Alabama and south Alabama folks can coordinate the Spring swap so we can all get together. I know I would love to meet y'all.

    Just a thought...

Too many things going on here and somehow I got confused about the dates. Thank goodness swaps are a month apart. Ameliad, do you know where in Evergreen you will gather for the swap? Can you give us directions to the meeting place? What time? It will take me about 3.5 hours to get there. If I leave at 6 am I would be there between 9-9:30 am. I would love to meet all of you. Check my trade list.

Hello everyone, the plan is to have the swap on Oct 9th from 9AM -1PM - it will be at my house - I have a big back yard and I can see downtown Evergreen from my deck. Since we have never done one before, we are still in the planning stages of exactly how we want to do things but have lots of ideas swimming around! We just it to be a fun event. Look forward to meeting new people and talking gardens!

I'll try to get a trade list up..but it will come down the morning of the swap....bad experience with people wanting ta trade that I don't have a clue on who they are...then they never send stuff....
Its so darn hot in the GH's to even be in during the day...LOL

Attention GW friends. I received two emails purportedly from AMELIAD (dianesosebee@ ???.com) The emails state she is in England and has run into financial problems and asked me to send money. I advised her to contact the US Embassy or US Consulate which will connect her to the American Red Cross. I have blocked her email address because I believe this is a scam. Diane, please give us an update on this Forum concerning the swap and on your situation.

I AM NOT IN ENGLAND - glad you recognized the scam. I've had to change my email and my home computer is being "deloused"!
the swap is still on for Oct 9th - my new email is: ameliadsosebee@yahoo.com
Sherry & I are looking forward to meeting some new friends and fellow gardeners or gardening want-to-bes - all are welcome! Just come visit!

I still plan to come. I've got a boat load of stuff to take to Jody in Letohatchee that I promised her this past spring. I'm glad to hear the hotel in the UK has released you and allowed you to use the computer and telephone. Oh, yeah; I was told by the scammers you were in almost a virtual lock-down. I noticed you made your email address available on Gardenweb. See if GW will remove it. About 10 years ago a group of pornographers in Russia took email addresses from GW and sent us solicitations to join their website. I'm an old soldier who has been around an Army post or two and I'm here to tell you the pictures they sent were explicit even to me. Even the FBI wouldn't allow me to send the pix to them. See you in about 3 weeks.

Terry, don't think your going home without a GH full of plants in the back of your truck... LOL
Wayne, your more then welcome to stop by also...I'm 2 miles off of 65..did your wife like the Begonia vine?

My trade list is up...I haven't added anything else yet...
but if your looking for something, please ask

the address is 103 E. McMillan in Evergreen - I can see downtown from my deck. The Sausage Festival is downtown in what we call "No Man's Land" - City Hall is right there - you drive past city hall - go under the bridge and my house is on the left as you go around a curve - there will be signs - you can park on the street or there will be parking at the "old elementary school" which is sorta across the street from me. Look forward to seeing everyone.

  • Frog_hollow_lady

Then maybe we should have it at the "old elementary school"..we will have plants that will need to be swapped...that means we will have to carry them...I for one don't want to carry any plants that far....we usually park with the back end of our cars/trucks all lined up, open them up and start unloading everything on the ground...I group mine..1)trades 2)extras 3)my plants I traded for..

but I'm game for trying anything new...LOL

the "plan" is to let traders/swappers park in my side yard - and I hope to have a couple of young boys to help with the loading and unloading. This is our first swap so we are "winging" it. But it will be fun!

Diane, I'm still planning on making the trek to Evergreen. If nothing bad happens, I'll see you in 2 weeks.

I like frog hollow lady's suggestion and my yard is large enough to have cars pull in and open the truck/tailgate - whatever! We will have a registration table and a coffee/water table(possibly some snacks) 9-10 will be registration/setup/get acquainted and visiting time and start swap at 10 - however "blessed are the flexible for they shall not be bent out of shape"! - will have some people to help with parking etc. We are open to suggestions - have flyers made to put out around town and to mail to friends out of town. Look forward to meeting everyone!

  • Frog_hollow_lady

I don't understand who/what we are trading if you have sent out flyer's....will they post to this site the trade list they have? It has been my experience that when we have "told" people about a swap they confuse swap for free...
I always bring ''extra'' plants ta unload...but thats with people I'm trading with...

The trade is less then a week away and so far only Terry,Wayne and myself have trade list up..
I don't mind packing a ''grab bag'' of plants as long as other people do the same...
    sorry for all the confusion...LOL

I just saw the post this morning and joined the forum. I had to leave most of my plants and herbs when I moved from Florence to Wetumpka in June so I don't have much to swap yet, but would like to keep up with future swaps or sales. I may have questions now and again as I'm in a different planting zone and not as familiar here as I was in NW Alabama. Good luck with the swap!

Hi inflorescence - we had the best time - went though pots of coffee, ate lots of snacks and talked a lot of gardening - even swapped a few plants. My birthday is 12/27-
