After researching a bit (what would we do without google, et al) I'm thinking it's a purple basil. If it is, I'll pinch it back some and plant it if I can find an empty sunny spot.

terramadre: That appears to be what it is and from what I've read about it, I'm glad I waited to identify it before I plant it in my garden. It's pretty to look at, but it sounds like it might eat my garden and a lot more. Guess I'll enjoy it in the pot for a while, make sure it doesn't develop seed, and toss it later. Thanks.

You wouldn't be able to miss the yummy fragrance of a basil!

I agree with the first post..........it's purple basil. I have one just like it. It smells yummy. Pinch and enjoy.

It is Perilla frutescens and it won't eat your garden. It does copiously reseed but is very easy to transplant or pull up and compost. It has a great scent and is a good pollinator attractor. The foliage does well in cut arrangements and is dynamite next to red or chartruese coleus, or pink begonias, or zinnias. I love it. Linda

I agree - it has a very complementary color, isn't too particular about soil, sun or moisture, and unwanted seedlings are easy to remove. I rarely see it at nurseries, so I always appreciate a few volunteer seedlings.

Thanks for all the replies. Since it tagged along with the plant from Linda, it must be a Perilla frutescens. It is pretty and I'll enjoy it. I love cut flowers and can't wait to try it out in an arrangement.
