Elephant ears( Alocasia,) a relative of the Arum family, do not like full sun. They need to be sheltered from direct sun. Feed regularly with diluted fertilizer, water heavily but make sure they drain well. Mine get a little full sun each day maybe an hour or so and they thrive. Mine stay in the ground year 'round.I cover mine well with leaves. If winter rots some of the tuber, it will resprout, just slice off the soft parts and fertilize well then cover with soil.

It depends on what kind of Alocasia, Colocasia, or Xanthosoma you have and how much water they are getting. I grow C. Chicago Harlequin, C. Black Magic, C. Rhubarb, A. Black Stemmed, C. Ruffles, X. Saggitifolia, C. Esculenta, X. Dwarf Green, and A. Odora in LOTS of water and full sun. I also have others in less water and less sun. It all depends.
