SVB - It has begun

After returning from 5 days away from my garden I inspected my beautiful squash plants in the ground carefully. Sure enough, despite wrapping the stems near the soil with aluminum foil, I could see above the foil the frass from the squash vine borers on about 75% of my plants. Although they hadn't wilted yet I got out a box cutter and tried to cut them out of the stems. I got a couple of the grubs out (Yuck!) but on many of the plants I couldn't find the grubs.

I covered the incisions with soil but I am not holding out much hope that these plants will ultimately survive.

I also have some squash plants in containers which I didn't have the heart to examine on the same day and I will look at those today.

I did plant a variety of species, including some that are supposed to be resistant, and perhaps they will survive.
I plan on planting some replacement plant seeds in a day or so.

Why is it so hard to grow squash? I know fellow gardeners in the same county who don't have this problem, Sigh...

I have them too -- I pulled one plant today, as it wasn't going to make it. I too have the supposed resistant squash growing, but I'm guessing I'll be pulling them out soon. What kind did you try?

This is so funny -- you have my same problems. My wife, who grew up in Georgia, remembers abundant squash all summer from her dad's garden and can't seem to figure out why I can't grow them here.

Please update on the container squash. I was going to try the same thing next year, way far away from the garden, in the hope that the SVBs wouldn't find them.
