I find that most perennials need periodic Miracle Grow to keep
blooming after the first flush. I would deadhead the Guara and the salvia -what kind do you have? Both need MG either way.

Our salvia is looking kinda pitiful too.

Having similar problems with my Gaura, but not so much with the salvia. The salvia is in a shadier area. The B&B is not blooming as well as the white right now though. I used granular, slow-release, when I planted everything but maybe I need to try a shot of MG.

My guara is (oops, I've been misspelling it!) Gaura lindheimeri "Corrie's Gold" and the salvia are Mexican Bush Sage leucantha.

I'll give 'em a shot with some MG. Thanks for the suggestions!

In my garden, the mexican bush sage starts blooming later than other salvias, in July along with rudbeckia fulgida and obedient plant. So maybe you just have similar light conditions.

I think Gaura is supposed to like rather lean soil shouldn't need much
extra fertalizer.

tedevore, thanks for the warning on late blooming MBS -- you were right; it started blooming about 3 weeks ago and is an absolute delight right now, about the only pretty thing I have left.

Does anyone have instructions on how to overwinter guara? I planted several this spring and absolutely love them, but can't find any instructions on how to winter them to be sure they will grow again next year.

I believe they are a winter-hardy perennial here and no particular special care is needed to protect them. Mine have always come back anyway.
