Butterflies at last

Finally, finally, finally, butterflies are back in my garden. Today's visitors included several small skippers, a Buckeye, an American Painted Lady and a female Monarch.

Ordinarily by now I would expect tens, if not hundreds, of butterflies to visit my flowers and host plants on a hot, clear day like this. But today was the first time all year I've seen more than a Sulphur or two. In the spring, I saw a few of the magnificent Tiger Swallowtails, widely spaced, but at that time the only flowers that I had blooming were peonies, tulips, narcissi, Eastern Blue Star and (forgive me, Terramadre) weeds -- henbit, bluets, dead nettle -- none terribly attractive for a big, hungry butterfly.

I have begun to believe that this will be a sparce year for butterflies, at least in the Jacksonville-Anniston-Talladega area. Are any of you seeing normal numbers?
