Burgess Seed and Plant Co. Bloomington IL...
I have been receiving catalogs through the mail from this company for a few years. I finally ordered something. 3 Colorado Blue Spruce, some Astilbe, and 2 Double Fuchsia house plants. Burgess forces their plants into dormancy for shipping. They believe that this guarantees the plants survival. SOOO I received the plants and they look dead. The Spruice trees are brown but still bend instead of break. So they are alive...I followed Burgess' directions carefully..I planted the Spruce trees in LARGE pots with lovely soil and plan to plant them in their permanent homes in the fall. The Astilbe is growing, the Double Fuchsia are little dried up sticks...I am waiting for a sign that they are going to live..
Question #1: Is forcing a plant into dormancy good for the plant?
Question #2: What do you think about the "dormancy" thang?
Question #3: I have looked at ratings verses Burgess and they are not rated well...BUT many of the people that rate these companies bad, are amateur gardeners. I want to know what some of the experts on this forum think.
