Rutabagas, turnips, turnip greens, mustard, kale, collards, leaf lettuce (for your area), carrots, broccoli, Brussels sprout, almost any type of green, especially in the Kohl veggie family.

Hi, magnoliasouth! I, too, am just south of Mobile so we're neighbors of a sort. I'm assuming you're talking about planting veggies, right? Supposedly, all of the ones listed earlier will grow for us in the fall/winter garden. Other than collards and brussel sprouts I grew last year, this will be my first attempt at a fall/winter garden.

Depending on how far away you've moved from, things can be VERY different in this region. One thing that's helped me is the "Plain Garden Planting Cycle" found on the Mobile Press Register's website.

Also, the folks at the John Archer Center/ co-op office on Schillinger road are very friendly and helpful.

Springhill Garden Center has cabbage, collards and tomato plants for sale now and will have broccoli and maybe brussel sprouts and cauliflower in a few weeks.

Don't forget beets.

What about in the soutside of Birmingham? I live in the city and my sister is a horticulturist and I'm just getting into planting. I have successfully rooted my first rosemary and basil (now in pots) and I have a prayer plant, jade, a mosquito plant, a type of fern (i forget which one), something that looks like another type of succulent, and a plant called "strawberry fields forever." (since the beatles are my favorite - all presents from my sister). I planted my first thing in the ground - some coleus (sp?) and i broke my pitchfork trying to turn the soil. I would like herbs, veggies, and things i can put in the ground (i wont' do that with herbs and veggies as i live IN the city, and people put stuff in there i don't want to eat!) thanks!

Last year, and I plan to this year, I planted mesclun in a 4x4 box. I placed a window pane over it when the weather got too cold, and I had salad all winter! Can't wait for this year!
