Gardening in Huntsville

Hi...

My DH and I are moving to the Huntsville / Madison area soon and I am starting to "plan" my flower garden. I am not familiar with gardening in this zone. I am wondering if any of you would mind telling me the types of flowers you have had good luck with in the area. I really prefer fragrant perinnials. I would love to have some lillacs and see (internet) companies that sell them for this zone, but I am wondering if anyone really has any luck with them there. How so climbing roses do? I would just like to get an idea for what you 'all have had good luck with.

Also, can any one tell me about local nursies they have had good luck with.

Been a long time since I lived in H'ville, but sme people on this forum do live there. AS for roses, you may want to go to Petals From the Past - about 20 miles south of Birmingham. Incredible selection, and very helpful staff - or you can mailorder from them.

Until the end of this month, you can call a Master Gardener Hotline and ask questions about what does well locally. Dial 1-877-252-4769 and you will get a menu to choose from; chose option 4 to get the people dealing with Madison County.

I highly recommend you go through the local Master Gardener course. That group is very active and they are great people. You'll learn how to garden in the Huntsville area and make lots of new friends. Linda
