i have always called these spider lilies.

this is in "downtown" loachapoka, al where they have the locally famous loachapoka syrup soppin' each fall(there is a mule-driven syrup mill just out of view to the right).

seems like they may be flowering early this year because i am remembering that they normally get mowed down by the grounds crew in preparation for that event which is usually held around the second or third weekend in october.

anyway, they were glowing red in the sunshine this morning and are a real eye-catcher. you can even see some of the many sulfur yellow butterflies that are feeding.
