My husband and I are planning to build a home on land in southeastern corner of AL. It is currently an open farm field with trees around the edges- about 33 acres. If we build with the front of the house facing the road, the home will be facing north. My dream is to have it secluded, with views from inside the house looking out at trees and possibly a pond. Unfortunately, the treed areas of the property are mostly the low spots, and I am being advised to build on the high spots. I need to know if there are fast growing trees to plant, and lower-growing understory plants that would create what I want in a reasonable amount of time (we are retirees and don't have forever to wait for slow-growing plants!) Would prefer native species with some seasonal color displays. Conifers also welcome. Relocating from Minnesota so a lot to learn and many more questions are sure to follow. Thank you so much.
