seed saving question

i posted this yesterday but my post disapeared.

last year I found some stray onions left in the garden when I was digging beds in the spring.

i only grow 2 that would have the appearance this did. Walla Walla and Yellow sweet spanish. I left them to go to seed and collected the seed. After collecting the seed i marked them Walla Walla and filed the pk. Now I am wondering if I have made a mistake. Since the Walla Walla onion cann't keep on the shelf for the winter under home storage, Am I correct thinking there is no way it kept out side all winter? The onions were only med in size when I found them. I wish I had a map of my garden but I lost all the information by accident one day and had to start my records over.Any opinions?
