Question about garlic growing habits

Posted by catherinet z5 (My Page) on

Hi all,
Its been so warm here in zone 5 this winter, that my (first time) garlic is growing out of the mulch. The leaves are about 8-10" tall. I've been adding more mulch, but they keep growing out of it. If I leave the leaves exposed, will they get frozen (when it eventually gets cold here), and then just grow new leaves in the spring? Thanks.

Hi Catherine,

My garlic grew a good 8+" above the mulch the past two years and survived the winters well. Our winters here in central NJ may not be as severe as yours, but the plants were snow covered several times and came through fine. The leaves became kind of twisted and appeared unhappy, but perked up in Spring and took off. I wouldn't expect you will have any problems.

Thanks Tom!

I reckon Tom is right. At worst, the tips get frost bitten. But the plants recover just fine once growth restarts in ernest.

Don't forget, many garlics are native to places like Siberia and the Georgian Republic, where they _really_ have winter.
