I don't know if Yopper is right or not. Dixondale seems to indicate that he is. On the other hand, Harvest Moon and some other companies sell both Ailsa Craig and Kelsae. I found one weksite that said Kelsae was introduced in Scotland in the early 1950's. According to Harvest Moon, Aila Craig goes back to 1887. They do seem to be similar onions according to the descritions.
I don't know of a Canadian souce. Harvest Moon sells it. I'm not sure what their shipping polices are to Canada.
Thank you all. Tomgyrll, I am getting a seed cataloge with my favorite onions, soon I hope. I forgot about Dominion Seed House, till you remindet me. Thanks again.
Kelsae and Ailsa Craig are two different strains. The Kelsae rights were purchased by Johnsons Seed Company of the UK several years ago. Though it may be saved from seed and sold by anyone here in the states they are the sole rightful seller in the UK. It gets much larger than the Ailsa Craig which is a totally different strain with a similar look. Unfortunatley a few companies like Dixondale Farms are apparantley confused (Wont say misleading until the truth be told) between the two strains.
You can buy Kelsae onion seeds at Early's Farm and Garden in Saskatoon. There is a limited supply due to a crop failure and even they are going out of them. Toll-free number is 1-800-667-1159
