1st time onion grower needs help

Hi,

I am interested in starting onions by seed. But what is the best time? I have Crimson Forest bunching onions, Red Bottle, and Yellow Borettana. I think the last one may be a long day variety and I live in Zone 9 Southern California. Will I have a problem? For the bunching onions do you grow them in a clump? What is the spacing for onions? Thanks

I have no idea of the growing conditions in southern California. Here, I have to grow short day onions in the winterime. Start from seed in September, Tranplant in Late November, harvest in May. Iuse a 6 inch spacing. Crimson Forest grows muliple bulbs from the same plant so I would suggest transplanting individually and letting them multiply on thier own. It does take a while so be patient. I have not grown the Yellow Borettana but the reccomended spacing is two inches. Summers in this part of Georgia are too hot for onions, but southern Cal may have more moderate temps.
