I am in zone 7a in central NJ and Dixondale's ship date for my order was something like April 13th. To me that is too late, so I changed it to March 30th. When they arrive I'll plant them as soon as the weather forecast indicates no unusual cold snaps in the near future.

I think Dixondale tends to recommend later (warmer) ship dates so as to reduce the probability of bolting, which can be triggered by too cold temperatures. I'd rather have the plants in hand and decide when to plant based on the forecast. You can hold them for three weeks.

No idea why they gave an earlier ship date for the more northerly zip code of your grandfather. They are pretty good at answering email questions, so you may want to drop them a line.
